Exponential turnpike property for hierarchical optimal control problems: from particle systems to hydrodynamic equations

Abstract: For optimal control problems involving time-dependent differential equations, the exponential turnpike property states that optimal solutions remain exponentially close to the optimal solution of the corresponding static problem. We study this property for controlled interacting particle systems and their macroscopic limits. Each particle follows a controlled ODE, forming an N-coupled dynamical system. As N goes to infinity, the collective behavior of the particles is described by a mean-field equation. For second-order dynamics, this mean-field model can be further approximated by hydrodynamic equations obtained through suitable moment closures. We construct stabilizing feedback controls to establish both the cheap control and exponential turnpike properties. These findings show that the turnpike property persists across the hierarchy of optimal control problems.
